Born on October 25, 1939 as José Maria Fernandes Marques in the city of Guimarães – whose name he assumed as a pseudonym – José de Guimarães is one of Portugal's most renowned contemporary artists.

Within the last 30 years he has developed a very specific pictorial language – a "pictorial alphabet" – which on one hand has been affected by the influence of African culture with its rituals and myths – with which he became acquainted during his long time military stay in Angola – but on the other hand by his own culture, the Portugese legends and his work stays in Asia und Mexico.

Guimarães primarily works as a painter but in the 80s he also created freestanding both-sided painted sculptures for public space. Also another group of works  – Guimarães' "Relicarios" (object boxes filled with different items and materials) deal with the cultic. In his later work Guimarães integrates neon as a material which interacts with his painting. Due to the neon's luminance those works obtain a much clearer language of form – in contrast to the artist's 80s works that emphazised the material.

The artist's latest work consists of 50 different, excitingly beautiful monotypes. They are produced in four formats with black printing ink on handmade deckle edged cardboard. The printed motifs are overlaid – black on black – by glass granulate applications, mostly in the form of circles and the figure '3'.
