Elsewhere ...
en route with graphic art by Galerie Edition Domberger

“Why look so far afield if such beauty is right before your eyes?“ Goethe once wrote.

His famous quote is the motto of our summer art journey titled “Elsewhere“.

What artists distinguishes from not-artists is their talent to be on the road with just their fantasy and color disregarding any travel schedules or traffic. But also our not-artist-voyages are happening in our minds' eye – when we have visions of the future, when we plan and when we come home and archive the images that remind us of our real trip.

Elsewhere is everywhere, it can be really near or really far, elsewhere could have been yesterday or decades ago.

50 years (!) ago the French artist Roger Bezombes printed two still lifes at Domberger whose intense coloring still fascinates. His prints with violin and melon suggest the flavor of a French bistro – which we complete automatically with imagined baguette, chansons and respective ambience.

Elsewhere and yet so close are the graphic prints of Ida Kerkovius. Her formally reduced and always masterly composed paintings – with motifs like “Garden“, “Bird in the Garden“ or “Tulip“ – displace us into a near world just in front of our front door seen through the eyes of a great Southern German artist. Her painter colleague Alexej Jawlensky once said on Ida Kerkovius: “She's entirely art“.

Entirely art and entirely elsewhere are also the lyrical motifs of the American artist Yale Epstein. His imaginary windows bring us to other places, they displace our senses and generate new fantasies. Where is the place that Epstein entitles with “Aurora“? Essentially the locatability of the scenes in Epstein's prints doesn't play any role – it's all about the atmospheres he creates. Atmospheres that enable inner relocations just through the view at those “windows“ on the wall.

Always locatable are the scenes of the Stuttgart painter Jürgen Leippert. In his prints city life is vibrating with its roads, traffic lights and everything we're looking for when we adjourn to urban places to feel close to life.

Wherever the journey goes – in art we're always elsewhere.

Choose a new travel destination for your walls from our summer special – for your daily routine time at home or at work.

Have a nice summer!
